Give a Hoot - June 2026

Jun 26
6 min read

👋 Hi neighbors! Hope you all have enjoyed the official start to Summer and all the World Cup action happening around town.

We’re going to spotlight some World Cup resources below, but before we do…

Mark your calendars for 2 fun neighborhood happenings this week:

  • 🌮 ONE Spirit Night at El Tesoro is THIS TUESDAY, 6/30. Please stop by for tacos, margs and more and a portion of proceeds from the day will go directly to ONE.

  • 🛝 Join fellow families for the next Neighborhood Playground Meetup, this Sunday, 6/28 at 10am at Walker Park.

And a big welcome to Toi Dickson who rejoined ONE this month and was a great addition to our in-person crew at Coan.

A few housekeeping items before we dive in:

  • Check out the minutes from our June meeting

  • 📆 Mark your calendars for the next ONE meeting on Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30pm, IRL at Coan or on Zoom

  • Become a ONE member by completing this form (it's free!)

Now let’s get into it…

In case you live under a rock, the World Cup is happening in our backyard.

  • That comes with perks - fun events, great people watching, great business for the City; but it also comes with logistical challenges…and traffic.

Our friends at Councilmember Bakhtiari’s office have compiled a few resources to make sure that we’re covered during this major event around town.

  • Navigate Atlanta: This new site will help you plan a safe, efficient, and convenient trip through the City during matches.

  • Real-Time Traffic Updates: Text “JOIN” to (470) 524-7673 and be alerted proactively on key traffic updates.

  • NotifyATL: Text “NotifyATL" to 24639 to sign up for Atlanta’s mass notification system. Great resource during the World Cup and for life in general.

  • Georgia Commute Options: This site helps you plan your commute during match days and avoid the worst of the traffic with a ton of free resources and graphics. Example below.

👇 See below for the non-logistical, but very critical social recommendations around our ‘hood:

Arguably more important than safety and traffic, we’ve got restaurants around town ready to serve food, drinks and screens to keep everyone entertained during the festivities.

A few recommendations to try out:

  • Decatur Watch Fest - this is Atlanta’s east side hub for all things World Cup action. Check the website for game viewings, daily musical performances and more.

  • El Tesoro - they’ve just opened their third location in South Downtown and have been touted on many blogs as great viewing at their Westend location. Plus, nothing sits better on a hot summer day than soccer and a spicy margarita.

  • Jolene Jolene - “Atlanta’s first bar for women’s sports” is also showing all the World Cup action, and is a fun spot and excuse to check out this new Kirkwood establishment.

  • Brewhouse L5P - Great drink deals and a bar focused on soccer, so you know you’ll get a great view of the game every time.

  • Manny’s Grant Park - They’re already the go-to for English Premier League so they’ve got soccer viewing in their DNA.

  • Halfway Crooks - Great seating options, including a rooftop view and close to all the other Summerhill dining and drinking excitement.

  • Bona Fide Deluxe - Turns out the giant screens can show soccer just as well as they can show throwback movies and TV shows.

We often hear from neighbors that they’ve got branches, trash, potholes, and a million other issues and just can’t figure out the best way to get it resolved.

Good news! The ONE inbox got 2 resources sent over this month that should help.

Check it out…

  • District 5 Help Form: After submitting a 311 case, fill out this Help Form to notify Councilmember Bakhtiari’s office that you have raised this concern. This will allow the Office to track constituent concers and hold the city accountable.

    • You must submit a 311 case first! This ensures things are propertly documented and can be followed up in an organized manner.

  • “Where’s My Project?”: Propel ATL has launched this new hub to keep neighbors informed on transportation projects by neighborhood. It is built around community organizing, so there is a push to reach more volunteers to help advocate for project progress from the City’s transportation infrastructure teams.

My test drive: I kept hitting an annoying pothole on Flora and decided to test this out myself.

  • I used the ATL311 app, got a case number and submitted this through the new Help Form linked above. It took 60 seconds!

  • Jacob, from Councilmember Bakhtiari’s office, emailed me within an hour letting me know the issue was escalated.

Try it out yourself!

ONE Executive Board

1 exciting update as of this week… the revised Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan for Edgewood has been officially adopted via City of Atlanta Ordinance.

  • Why this matters: An official neighborhood plan offers guidance for future development and decisions that impact Edgewood and reflects the opinions and needs of the neighborhood. Think blueprint for future decision-making to ensure neighborhood values are reflected in decision-making.

And this plan has been nominated to the Atlanta Regional Commission for a Regional Excellence Award.

🙏 Thanks to Steph Salyer and many neighbor volunteers for the hard work that went into bringing this plan to life.

Transportation

Robert Brown is our new Transportation Committee Chair! We’re excited for Robert’s vision for Transportation in Edgewood, including a focus on neighborhood input and advocacy around infrastructure.

All about Robert: He is an Associate Professor of Law at John Marshall Law School, where he teaches Contracts, Corporate Law, and other upper-level courses. His research focuses on the intersection of law, finance, and race.

  • Robert is a proud Morehouse College graduate and earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

He comes to ONE having served on more than ten nonprofit boards. He also served as volunteer coach of the Spelman Speech & Debate Team for nearly a decade, so he’s ready to debate transportation.

Robert lives in Edgewood with his wife, Sherrie, and they have two adult children.

Reach out to Robert at edgewoodtransportationatl@gmail.com.

Parks & Greenspaces

🏞 After a vote to rename Walker Park in our May meeting, neighbors voted in the June meeting on a recommendation for a new name: Rose Hill Park.

  • This name recommendation honors the displaced African American community, Rose Hill, that was displaced by what is now Candler Park and Edgewood.

What’s next: The neighborhood recommendation will go to Councilmember Bakhtiari’s office for legislating. No NPU-O vote is needed.

The Committee has also submitted a request for funding to cover a survey of Walker Park in anticipation of work on the park in the coming months.

  • The neighborhood voted ‘yes’ in support of this funding request.

Parents Network

Our Parents Network and Education Committee continues to find ways for families to gather regularly, and they have the aforementioned events coming up this week:

  • 🌮 ONE Spirit Night at El Tesoro is THIS TUESDAY, 6/30. A portion of proceeds from the day will go to ONE.

  • 🛝 The next Neighborhood Playground Meetup is this Sunday, 6/28 at 10am at Walker Park.

1 messaging thing: If you’d like to be part of the neighborhood parent GroupMe, join here.
