Give a Hoot - August 2026
Updated: Sep 23
👋 Hi neighbors!
First - a big thank you to Alison Johnson, who joined us this month from the Housing Justice League to share more about the incredible work HJL is doing to advocate for tenants in Atlanta.
Read the minutes (below) for more context on Alison’s conversation, and for additional links to read up on HJL.

Before we dive in, a couple time-sensitive reminders:

Executive Updates
Always dreamed of being on the ONE Board? Good news - we’re looking for candidates to run for the ONE Executive Board for the 2027 term.
Want to know more about roles or commitment? Reply here and we’ll connect you with the current board member.
Next month we’ll be voting on the updated ONE By-laws.
Please review the proposed changes, and come ready to vote on Sept. 15th.
Why the changes? The goal is to align bylaws with the newly adopted Neighborhood Plan so ONE’s plan, values and governing rules are all aligned.
Education Committee & Parents Network
🚲 + 🚌 The bike bus has kicked off this school year and vibes are high!
Every Friday @ 7:15 families in the neighborhood hop on bikes and travel in
Sign up for more information and updates throughout the school year.
Cow bells and cheering is encouraged from neighbors not headed to Toomer on Fridays, as the goal is to get our Edgewood kids excited about school 🙌
Ruby Bridges Walk to School Grant is in the works (s/o Kathy Munz) for November.
This annual event across the US, on Nov. 14th, honors Ruby Bridges, commemorates her historical walk to school in 1960, and brings community together around this moment to get kids excited about school.
Kathy and team are making sure this is a fun event for all. More to come, but mark your calendar to participate later this fall.
Parks & Green Spaces
We are $200 shy of the annual Green Space Insurance Fundraiser.
Please consider a donation to help this green space stay unlocked.
The hope is this need is temporary, as plans are in the works for the City of Atlanta to acquire this property from APS, putting the insurance requirements on the City vs. our neighborhood.
Walker Park plans are moving forward, with the completion of survey work and preliminary drawings for the revised entryway.
This project will create a more inviting, accessible and modern entryway to Walker Park on Memorial.

Councilmember Liliana Bakhtiari
Flooding on Mayson is a priority for the Councilmember’s office.
District Director, Jacob Pierce, has talked to watershed and there are upcoming meetings about the issue.
Discussions are in the works with APS about the Coan Amphitheater, which would bring an outdoor community space to Edgewood. More to come!
And please remember 311! 311 is critical to getting issues resolved because it allows Jacob and team to track patterns and trends, and follow up on issues diligently.
Atlanta Public Schools
Ken Zeff shared more about Toomer’s Accelerated Literacy Model (ALM), as Toomer is only 1 of 4 schools selected to implement this program.
Developed in partnership with the APS Literacy Council, a group of district leaders, educators, researchers, and community partners are focusing on closing the early literacy gaps and accelerate literacy outcomes.
We look forward to seeing you at upcoming neighborhood meetings!
